On Monday, June 5, 2023, TGP Partylist representatives Deputy Majority Leader Congressman Bong Teves Jr. paid a courtesy visit to Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) Secretary Conrado Estrella III and Undersecretary Amihilda Sangcopan.

One of the topics discussed during the meeting was the provision of assistance by the DAR to the abaca farmers nationwide.

Sec. Estrella also promised to join the meeting initiated by Cong. Bong Teves, Jr. with the fellow Congressmen of abaca producing districts/provinces together with the Philippine Fiber Industry Development Authority (PhilFIDA) on how we can further improve our abaca industy and help our abaca farmers.

It can be noted that the Philippines is the number one source and the biggest exporter of abaca in the world, accounting for the 80% supply of abaca in the international market.

However, in 2020, our abaca farmers were greatly affected by Super Typhoon Rolly which ravaged majority of abaca farms in the country.

Until now, our abaca farmers are still in need of assistance to restore the quality and quantity of the abaca we produce.
